Home-Start Kirklees

Having young children is an exciting but frequently challenging time for any family. Home-Start is here to help people who need extra help to meet those challenges and are struggling with being a parent.

Home-Start Kirklees offers unique support for parents to help grow their confidence and strengthen relationships with their children. The scheme helps parents to reduce feelings of isolation, become more resilient and cope with the challenges of being a parent.

A team of trained volunteers, who are usually parents themselves, offer support matched to each family’s needs.

The volunteers support families with at least one child aged under 5 (not in full-time education), visiting them weekly at home. They provide advice including:

  • Emotional support for parents
  • Enrichment support to children – playing with them, reading and establishing routines
  • Practical help with daily and household tasks – including financial guidance and budget planning
  • Help for parents to get out and about and meet other people in their local community
  • Support groups for teenage mothers and their children
  • Information and links to other organisations.
